I was able to run the BF2 demo but it was pretty unstable. It does
give you a taste of what BF2 is like though. I just got the full game,
downloaded the 1.02 patch and got the latest Nvidia drivers. I don't
think there is any way to get the demo stable, there was a memory leak
that made it seem like you needed 2GB of RAM to run it well. The retail
version was kind of unstable out of the box but applying the patch and
updating the graphics driver seems to have fixed most issues. I guess
the latest retail patch introduced some issues with ATI cards. This
game really needs at least an X800 on the ATI side and a 6800GT on the
Nvidia side.
The best thing to do is play the single player maps a lot, try playing
both sides, get familiar with the controls, trying vehicles out,
following the map. It really is better to play it more as a squad or
team, go with your guys, let them go in and draw fire, use the tanks
for cover, protect your tanks with anti-tank weapons. Once you are
online, the team play makes all the difference.
There are so many elements to this game, it must be overwhelming for
somebody to just start out on it. There are guys that have been playing
Battlefield 1942 since it came out, and they have become really good.
The underlying gameplay with BF2 is not all that different from BF1942
but the level of graphics makes it easy to forget about BF1942 and BFV.
Some guys just concentrate on flying the aircraft and get really good
at that. Some guys like being the sniper, some like being engineers and
laying mines. You just have to try them out. BF2 makes it a little
easier to get familiarized since its single player is a lot better than
BF1942.
There is a BF1942 newsgroup which has become a mostly BF2 newsgroup,
alt.games.battlefield1942. Not all providers carry it but you can read
it through google groups, http://groups-beta.google.com. There are a
lot of people there with configuration problems and tend to help each
other out as they can. They usually discuss other resources like mod
sites and forums where you can learn more or whatever. I am amazed how
good and improved BF2 is over BF1942 and BFV, this is next generation
online combat gaming and a real blast.
