Hi folks,
Anybody had any joy with this? On my system it runs fine for a while
than starts pixelating then horrible radiating lines start forming - a
bit like a smashed mirror, then it hangs the whole box.
I'm running FarCry with 1.32 patch and the latest nVidia drivers on
WinXP/Pro SP2 on Athlon XP2500+ on Chaintech 7NIF2 mobo,
I do have a concern over the 300W powersupply although the FX6600GT
specs say this is ok.
Archived from groups: comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.action (More info?)
The 300 Watt requirement for the 6600 GT is the MINIMUM it will run with,
assuming you have almost NO other components in your computer. You
undoubtedly need a larger PSU.

Sounds more like an overheating problem than anything. Check your case
and vid card cooling.

Quote "The 300 Watt requirement for the 6600 GT is the MINIMUM it will

That is not correct. I have a 6600GT running in my Shuttle XPC with a
230watt PSU and I have no problems what so ever. Also have 1 harddrive
and 1 optical drive.
I think the orginal posters problem is driver related or possible
overheating issues.
Archived from groups: comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.action (More info?)
Well, I have tried the lated nVidia drivers and the latest Omega
drivers so that shouldn't be the issue. So that really just leaves
heat. How can that be objectively determined?
Archived from groups: comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.action (More info?)
Try a utility called speedfan (www.almico.com/speedfan.php). If your
cards got onboard monitoring it should pick it up. I know my Legend
6600GT does not appear to have any hardware monitoring inbuilt.
I guess check to make sure the fan works when powered on. It should run
fairly slow or not at all when using 2D apps but when using 3D apps it
should start up and spin rather fast. Also, make sure its got plenty of
airflow.
Failing that run it with the case off and a fan blowing on it. Your
going to have to do some trail and error to eliminate the problem.

I don't think heat would be an issue. The 6600 GT can operate at up to
100 degrees celsius, and indeed there are even cards available that only use
passive cooling (copper heatsinks + heatpipes). One reviewer claimed he
even ran the 6600 GT without a heatsink just fine, although the memory
started getting very hot.
Possibly, a cheap power supply may be the culprit. The original poster
might want to look into a better quality power supply, 430 watts or more.
Plan on spending some money for one- cheap power supplies are usually
inefficient and don't deliver nearly as much power as they say they do. You
might want to check out Tomshardware.com and look up "power supplies" in the
search field and read up on the subject. I have an Antec 430W TruePower
2.0 that seems to work just fine, though Tomshardware claims that the
voltage tolerences weren't good enough on some of the Antec True Power 2.0
models to meet the newer ATX specifications- I can't say I've seen any
problems yet.
Also, its important to find out if this behavior can be replicated in
other games besides Far Cry. If it can do so in other games, and a new
power supply doesn't fix it, it's possible the graphics card may be
defective.

Have you checked the temp of your card? Some Nvidia cards will show GPU
temp. I've been having a problem with my FX 5900 lately. The fan doesn't
spin up when it's hot so the screen will get darker, lose resolution and
eventually go black.Checked GPU temp and it starts out at 51C and gets to
around 78-80C in minutes. Then wierd things start happning.

Sorry, I lost the original attribution...

I had exactly the same problem with my ATI 9800. It didn't happen at
all when I first put the box together, but started showing up when it
was about ten months old.
I've just replaced it with a Gigabyte 6600gt card (got it from
Newegg), coincidentally enough. The new card just went in today, but
everything I've thrown at it runs perfectly. UT2004, Fate, some nVidia
demos...

The Shuttle case my new 6600gt is in is a Shuttle SFF, I think the PSU
is a mere 240W, and it seems okay so far. Just doing a "hand over the
exhaust vents" test show the system is much cooler with the 6600gt
than it was with the 9800.

Try other games (Fate for some reason went "bad" faster than any other
game, and you can download it for free), if they also show the
problem, try another video card.
I think some of the RAM on the ATI burned out, so textures and
vertexes that were stored there didn't come back, but that's just
conjecture. I think it could give you the same symptoms even across
chipsets.

you can only check the temp is the graphics card has a sensor and
very few models have that feature. look on the cd that came with the card
for a temp monitoring program - if there isnt one then likely your card
doesnt support that function. and the 100 c remark someone posted earlier is
rubbish.
a GPU is basically a CPU and they operate in the same temp range 40-60 is
okay and
over that you start to get problems. Open the case and point a desk fan into
it and that
will significantly drop the temps - if it cures your problem then its
definitely temp
related and you have to look at better cooling.

My cheap 6600GT has one, and the temperature monitor information is
available via the NVidia drivers in the control panel, you don't need
a separate program.

Re; ".............problem with my ATI 9800....."
could be that with age the cards fan speed slowed/dust got in...causing
overheating...or/and the thermal paste used between the cards CPU and its
heatsink dryed out ...again overheating ..
Had these sort of probs. on my 9800.

Re: original point..
Have a look at the thread just previouse on this group "frame limiting in
games"...
perhaps turning on the V-Sync /frame limiter video setting would reduce the
work the Video card has to do and stop what sounds like overheating..

Update: I've tried the downloaded HL2 demo and it exhibits the exact
same problem so that eliminates the application as the cause.
It can't be heat - I can switch the system off for a day, fire it up
and fire up the game and the problem occurs instantly. I don't think
the system could get too hot that fast.
Therefore that seems to leave 2 possibilities - the card is faulty or
the power supply is not up to it.
