it isnt supposed to work...if it is a usb mouse.
if it isnt, then there is something else wrong.
a ps2 mouse works as far as i know.
a usb mouse will not...
do you have any other mice you can try on this computer?
anyways, you can navigate without the mouse.
that is what i do, because i have my mouse plugged into one of my usb ports.
ps2 mice should work...
BTW, is this a USB one that is using an adapter?
shouldnt matter, but i am not sure.
I'm trying to change the name of a file that I can only change in safe mode. I don't know how to navigate that option without a mouse! any other ideas!
theres no reason why it shouldnt work in safe mode, very odd, anyway, what is it you are trying to do? if its just renaming a file, it may be easier to do it from dos (unless your drive is ntfs...)
If they squeeze olives to get olive oil, how do they get baby oil?
Navigating in Windows without a mouse isn't that difficult.

One way to tell if your mouse is the source of the problem is to go buy a cheapie mouse, one of those 2-button $5 dollar jobbies. Plug it in the PS/2 port, and see if it works.
well ,i dont know....i havent even had to try to find out if windows xp has a safe mode....
but on windows 98se, when i would go into safe mode, it would say "no ps/2 mouse deteceted"
in the bios, i have the dos usb or legacy usb disabled.
maybe that is why it never worked.
i just learned to navigate without the mouse.
sure, the mouse is easier, but without it isnt much harder, just a bit slower.
Yeah, XP has a Safe Mode. Hit F8 just before Windows begins to load.
That's interesting ... that in Win98's Safe Mode, that your PS/2 mouse wasn't detected. Windows should have run the mouse with the default Window's drivers, instead of the third-party drivers from a company like Logitech, etc.
You definitely need to allow the USB controller to have an IRQ if you want to avoid a problem with something like a USB mouse.
I also think it's a good idea to know how to navigate in Windows without the mouse. You never know when it might be necessary. And I agree ... it's not much harder; it's just different.
I use keyboard shortcuts all the time ... the combination is faster than just the mouse alone. You can move pretty quick if you are using both hands.
tis true...
oh..in the bios, i have USB enabled, it is just there is a second option for like dos that is disabled.
i guess i will enable it.
but yeah..i have never had to go into safe mode yet..which i guess is a good thing..hehe
knock on wood tho...because all i need is for something to happen.UGH
