Dynamics--A Ghost is Born

Re: the perennial discussion of dynamics or lack therein, I was just
listening to the new Wilco record, A Ghost is Born, and couldn't help
noticing how much dynamic range it has compared to pretty much any other
pop/rock record these days.

I can't tell yet if it's that great of a record, but it does get really
quiet and then really loud and the meter actually bounces around some
inbetween. Sounds pretty good.

Sacrilege to let meters bounce like that! Who knows where they might
land?

Right? Not on the radio, I guess. Though they did sell out two nights at
Radio City in less than an hour.

I sort of think it's funny that as Wilco gets more and more arty, the
records get more and more dynamic. It's almost like it's consciously avant
garde-istic of them to reject modern dynamic "standards."

Well, good for them.

And with Nels Cline now in the band it's only going to get more dynamically
varied, if they let him really play.

I've got tickets for tonights show in Dallas. It's in an old
converted theatre.....I can't imagine it seats more than a few
hundred. Should be very intimate and a GREAT show. I'll post details
afterwards.

I saw them do the Pgh Arts Festival this summer. I thought they
sounded great but I got really tired of songs ending in
NOISE...everyone beating on thier instrument for what seemed like 5
minutes. Is that art? I think seeing Revolution #9 done live would
be a similar experience. I think songwriting is a much higher form of
expression and Jeff has that thing down as well as anyone these days.

I'd like to see them strip the act down and get more musical...but
then I am relativley simple in my tastes. Box Full Of Letters is
still my favorite Wilco tune.

If it's the Granada, word has it that they removed the curtains, put in
a huge number of speakers to overcome the reflections, and basically
the acoustics wreak.... take some plugs.

Same thing just happened at the new Poor David's Pub... the new
location is 4 parallel walls and a concrete ceiling. Should be a real
challenge to work Brave Combo there tomorrow night.

Yeah, David, I heard that too that they changed a bunch of stuff.
But, they supposedly brought in someone to really tweak the system and
room out. I heard they spent in the neighborhood of $300K on the room
and PA. Not that dollars equals a good sound by any means. We'll
see. I'm looking forward to the show.
Again, I'll report on the band and venue later.

Funny you mention that Tom. I really, really dug the show and the
sound in this place was maybe the best in town. But, I was thinking
the same thing about the songs all progressing to that same sort of
chaos ending. Everyone strumming the guitars as fast as they could
and just letting the delays multiply....hitting the drums with timpani
sticks, etc......

The opening band Calexico (sp) were really good. I am definitely
going to buy some of their stuff now. I'd seen them written up, but
never paid much attention.

Heard an interview with them them on the local college station a few weeks back (NPR? PRI?) and was quite impressed. Loved their cover of "Alone Again Or."

I know the 'current' monitor guy - pretty new behind a desk but not
to the scene... been around the country a number of times as an
audience 'taper'.

His interpretation is that the PA is monstrous overkill in an attempt
to overcome the residuals of an untreated room. I was invited down
last week to watch repairs made necessary by an inexperienced
FOH operator during the first couple of days of operation in this
incarnation, but I couldn't get there.

I'd love to hear your impressions. I've seen a couple of shows in
that room back when it was still showing movies, it had potential.

Yeah, I"m hoping their record captures the vibe of their live show.
That song sounded great live as well...
