Opinions on the new UK site for 'on-demand' gaming? Obviously you will need
high speed broadband and it uses client technology (I'd like to learn more
about that before I'd use it) and you can start playing when only 1/3rd of
the game has been d-loaded.

Not the best collection of games in the world yet but allegedly 4 new games
are added every month (latest was Painkiller). Apparently the site has
support from Ubisoft, Atari, Eidos and M$ with more about to sign up.

Games can be downloaded and played on multiple PC's while subscribed - your
subscription is checked in real time so you can play anywhere with a net
connection. The plus - play it on holiday or round a mates. The
negative - cant play until you verify you're a subscriber so you have to
connect to the net first. Games are also always fully patched
automatically. Hmmm sounds familar, wonder where they got those ideas? ;-)

There's currently a week long trial for a quid.

http://www.metaboli.co.uk/

SK - cant ban you from this thread but no ridiculous rants FFS - I'd be
interested in hearing opinions on this non-Valve, non-Steam online
distribution method.

you really don't get it Shawk
did you ever see me flaming systems like direct2drive?
metaboli is the same... yes i didn't know about it i checked
it and i'm not interested, i will not ever buy anything from
it and i will not advertise or warn others about it but you
will not see me flame and go against it
like direct2drive, metaboli is yet another way pc gamers can
get their pc games, and if more choice is available i think
its good even if these particular options are not for me
choice is good! good!
choice is the key for consumers, is the most important thing
so if pc games have more choice that is good
systems like metaboli compete in a fair way to get costumers
metaboli is another player so it adds even better competition
so its good
free market, competition, fair play
so no you will not see me going against metaboli
but why do i instead go against valve and steam?
with steam you have no choice
steam doesn't add, steam takes from you!
with steam there is no competition but rather MONOPOLY!
steam took choice away
with metaboli for example, every single pc game they sell is
also available in a PROPER PHYSICAL RETAIL VERSION PACKAGE
you have the choice of choosing to buy via metaboli or buy
it in a proper physical retail package in a retail store
i bought painkiller in a retail store and i LOVE THAT GAME
fortunately i had the freedom to choose here to buy it but
if other prefer to buy painkiller via metaboli they can also
they have the freedom like i did and that is good
that is called competition and competition is always good
i will always choose the physical retail version over any
downloadable version but this choice has to be made by each
pc gamer, its an individual choice, its freedom of choice
now with steam there is no choice, there is no alternative
with steam its monopoly, its forcing you to accept a system
steam is taking from pc gamers any choice and that i will
never accept and tolerate

i only accept being defeated in a FAIR fight
valve doesn't want a FAIR fight, they want to impose to take
from pc gamers the choice
valve wants to DICTATE how pc games buy, play and patch
they don't want pc gamers to have the freedom to choose but
rather IMPOSE on us a system we didn't ask for!
that is WRONG! WRONG! WRONG!

no one has the right to impose anything to anyone
you pro steam fanatics don't understand that the same way
you have all the right to choose steam, i and many others
have also the right to NOT CHOOSE STEAM
respect us! respect our own choise of not wanting steam!
systems like metaboli respect us! they respect us!
valve and steam DON'T!
and you when you don't accept MY RIGHT to not use steam you
also don't respect me!

now you see the huge difference between steam and metaboli?
now you see why i will never flame metaboli but i will do it
with steam

steam represents everything BAD a company can do to consumers
which is take choice, impose and try to create monopoly
long live pc games with FREEDOM OF CHOICE!
down with GREEDY DICTATOR MONOPOLISTIC INTENTION by valve!

post made in a steam-free computer
i said "NO" to valve and steam

If you'd have stopped right there then people would discuss games with you.
Unfortunately you then go off into your boring, repetitive tirade about a
game that most of us played 9 months ago and then moved on. John Lewis
started yet another thread about it today. I just dont care - talk about
something new.

There I've said it..

Its not a bad idea, but 83 pounds a year to play old mostly B grade
games is too much for me to want to subscribe. It would be far cheaper
to buy them on Ebay, play them, then sell them on again.

Completely true. It is however one to watch. If it catches on I can see
distributors seeing it as another means of distribution that costs them
nothing and gains them royalties each time a game is d-loaded. Given that
we may see games going into those systems much quicker and new games
becoming available to subscribers. Might be more worthy of consideration
then.

Sorry, not guilty. I just added some observations to an existing
(Steam) thread.

Yes you're right. Original thread must have fell off my server. Apols for
that.
