A stopgap operating system with limited support that Microsoft quickly
tries to brush under the rug and move on?
I've been running Windows x64 for about a month. It seems to run OK,
though there are alot of minor flaws. Some games, as I said in another
post, like ones using Starforce copy protection, won't run. And there's
alot of hardware out there that just won't work because there are no 64-bit
drivers. I thought about putting in an old Fortissimo III soundcard just
for a change of pace until the new X-Fi comes out (I miss the Sensaura
effects in games), and it turns out there's no drivers for it.
I really wish I had thought about this stuff before I upgraded. Read
all the sites and you got the impression it was the best thing since sliced
bread. But no sooner did I buy it that MS seems to be gearing up for
Windows Vista. Do you think Windows x64 is DOA?
Archived from groups: comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.action (More info?)
Probably. My own view is that it has limited usefulness right now since we
are still living in a predominantly 32 bit computer universe. Call for Help
on Tech TV recently did a review and concluded that there was no compelling
reason to upgrade to 64 bit Windows unless you have a computer with a 64 bit
cpu and you need to run one of the few 64 bit business apps that are out
there. Comparison with Windows ME? Maybe. More like an advanced beta IMHO
whose features will be tested in the real world and them improved on and
implemented in a more mature product down the road.

Yes... very likely waiting...waiting.... for Vista.
It could have been much better but Intel and M$$ were in each other's
pockets, and Intel's 64-bit products have been (er) delayed...
Relations between M$$ and Intel have soured recently........
Win XP 64 has not yet been released as a stand-alone product, and may
never be. Only available as a WinXP free-upgrade.
Best to dual -boot Win XP and WinXP64, but that requires the
purchase of 2 copies of WinXP. I shall be building a AMD X2 system
in about 3 months time, and shall acquire 2 copies of Win XP.
A relative of mine happens to work for M$$ and wants to gift
them to me.

I got Windows XP x64 as an OEM product when I bought some stuff to
upgrade my PC. It wasn't exactly cheap.
Do 64 bit games like Far Cry or Riddick actually run 64 bit with regular
XP?

Not as far as I know. And I believe that Far Cry after the 64-bit
patch will not run with regular XP.... however consult the patch docs
for these particulars.

It isn't so much Windows x64, but the support for the OS and 64bit
applications. Kind of like dual-core. Sure it is the next step, but jumping
into it right now won't gain you much only because very little software is
multi-threaded right now. If you were to buy a new PC today, I wouldn't make
dual-core or a 64-bit OS your deciding factor. I give it 3-4 years before
dual-core multithreaded software becomes mainstream, and maybe even longer
before 64-bit apps do.
I realize being at the very top of the technology curve is ok, only if there
is backwards compatability, and the gains of the new technology are better
than the current. I am an early adopter myself, but have learned the hard
way, and tend to wait it out for about a year before jumping in allowing
time for software to catch up not to mention eliminating bugs.

John, ...that's about when I plan on upgrading two systems. One for
work (federal gov budget) for photoshop and video, and one for home
(private budget) for games and such.

Will do.....but not before mid-end September. I shall be building a
single system for multiple-monitor pro-video work and high-performance
gaming. Reliability, performance, value for money and reasonable
insulation against near-term obsolescence are key drivers. The
appropriate stars have been moving into alignment for the past
year.

you upgraded.

64 bit apps will be commonplace a lot quicker than dual-core
multithreaded SW takes full advantage.

Windows x64 was a beta months before the official OEM launch. It's not
like this stuff came from nowhere.
Oh, and what else pisses me off- Epic has an Unreal Tournament 2004 64-bit
executable that they used for demos- but they can't be bothered to release
it to the public.

It doesn't appear to be a patch, as such, but a complete overhaul with its
own .exe. You do get birds, fish, insects and improved textures though.

I just set up a dual boot and run games only from x64. I've only noticed a
big difference with Far Cry.

You cant compare this to Windows ME at all because Microsoft is
specifically NOT marketing this Operating System to consumers - you
cant even buy it in a store. Now you know why - its not for consumers.

Nope. It's just too new. And unlike when XP came out, where there was lots
of hardware for it TO run on, there aren't that many 64bit cpu's out there
just yet. Especially not in the Intel arena.
SOME hw mfgrs say they can't see making 64bit drivers for non-professional
hardware. Actually, that was Wacom and they'll change that tune eventually.
AMD currently has the run of the market with 64 bit cpu's and I think dual
core. But the majority of corporate systems are Intel, and are not cutting
edge items. It will probably be a while, but I think Windows 64 will end up
maturing nicely. Until then, I'll be dual booting

You are really TOO blessed, John! I mean with friends like that..... LOL!
Right now, I have 3 rigs running with XP. I have the beta dl I registered
at M$ to get, but realize at some point soon I'll have to send them one of
my XP Pro disks. I'll still need all my XP's!!!
The lack of driver support is why I have to dual boot. If I could get
drivers for the printer, scanner and Graphire3 then fine. But there are NO
64 bit compatible drivers for any of those.

True enough Walt
I don't mind it really. the X2 still does really well
with normal XP Pro SP2 and all the regular 32 bit stuff. And this one does
it noticeably faster than my P4 3.0E does. So there is no 'loss' for me.
But the games was what it was all about for me. And Far Cry 64 bit just
ROCKS! I've never seen any game look SO good and move so FAST! Even Doom3
isn't suffering any from this ug
