Canadian resident here... looking to get a Philips Continental 420 open-reel
tape recorder/player repaired.
Have quite a few tapes in pristeen shape. The machine looks perfect but
doesn't playback too well.
Does anyone have any info about the subject?

one idea might be to call your local radio station. if the chief engineer
has been around a for a few years he will remember how to service reel to
reels. he probably will have alignment tapes and tension gages too... and if
he is looking to pick up a few dollars on the side your in business.

That must be *very* old indeed. Unlikely to be able to source anything other
than generic parts as spares.

Where in Canada are you?

Phillips have a service centre in Scarbourgh (Toronto), if you bug em
enough they will help you.

What is wrong with it? If the motors are gone you might be out of
luck. Check with Phillips about getting belts.

Are the heads clean?

Have you tried doing the regular alignment? What happens when you do?

U R most kind to answer. The machine dates back to 1967 I believe.

Thank you a lot.
Will try to locate the Philips service center, because it is not listed on
Philips website.
I believe the motor is fine but that the belts and such maybe the problem,
since my dad had those replaced in 1992 so the speed would be accurate.
Maybe they dried out because of underuse.
