First of all, its called a DVD-ROM. And no, you can play cds, dvds and cd-rs on a DVD drive but u cant record, u will need a cd recorder drive for that.
My sig's faster than yours, and it overclocks better too....
Although the person above is partically correct - there are actually drives out there that are a combinded DVD-ROM/CD-R/W/CD-ROM drive. I'm not sure how good they are, but I've seen a couple brands when I went to Sams Club the last time I was there as well as at Best Buy and CompUSA recently.
But if you want to burn them onto DVD's, then you'll need one of those brand-new DVD Recordable drives, which will run you like $300-400.

Lets see if this helps.... DVD-RAM was a short lived standard using a cartridge based loading system. It was not compatibable with anything other than itself and if I remember correctly didn't support CDs at all. The current offerings are DVD-R/DVD-RW and DVD+R/DVD+RW. Both formats support recording standard CDR and CD-RW burning, and most drive suppliers list this as supported. The problem you might have is with your CD player you wish to use the disc in. CD-RW has been know to have problems in older CD players, but they normally support CDR. In some rare cases even the CDR disc will not work. I have some very old RISC systems which will not read any CDR/CDRW disc.
So, bottom line is you would be able to create CDs using a DVD writable drive (which is what I do with mine) but expect to pay at least $300 for the drive. The nice thing about is that if you want to save off 4.7GB worth of data then you have the option of burning a DVD. And if you have a newer DVD player you can always burn you own movies (both Video CD as well as DVD) with most of the available drives.
