Hi,

I'm looking to install a printer on our Windows Server 2003 so one of our systems can print to it, however the printer is physically at a different location and on a different network that's connected to a different ISP. Both networks have routers with DHCP enabled.

I'd rather not setup a VPN as I am unfamiliar with it. How do I go about solving this problem?

You could try to map the ports though the router to the printer but this would expose the printer to the internet. You would then have to somehow firewall off the printer to only allow authorized access. On top of that many ISP block the microsoft ports to protect users who do not use a router and directly plug in a PC.

I suspect even though it is a pain you will end up using a VPN to solve this.

I ended up trying out Hamachi from Log Me In, which allows you to deploy a quick network and share resources.

Everything I read on port forwarding said not to do it because it's unsecure. Eventually , I'll have to setup a VPN on our server.
