Guys, a very small group of you have made this newsgroup a most unpleasant
place to hang out. You seem to have forgotten that usenet is a world wide
newsgroup, and by hijacking it to promote your own political leanings,
you've alienated a huge part of the readership. None of you have changed a
single mind about their political leanings, or the person that they're going
to vote for, yet you've taken up an inordinate amount of bandwidth defending
your opinions (usually by attacking others). There's much less 'reasoned
debate' here than there used to be, and a whole lot more yelling and finger
pointing. And the bulk of this yelling and finger-pointing has absolutely
NOTHING to do with audio.

I tried to weed out a few unpleasant individuals with a kill file, but
several of the very worst offenders on the political yammering threads are
also guys whose opinions I value when discussing audio. And people who I've
met and liked. Since I'd lose the benefits of their knowledge and experience
by killfiling them.I hesitated to do so. But an audio newsgroup with more
than half of the posts completely unrelated to anything even approaching
audio subjects is worthless to me. So, I'll leave y'all to it.

This used to be a nice neighborhood - one where I spent probably too much
time.Not anymore. Instead, add my name to the very long list of folks who
don't come here anymore.

This sort of things happens in unmoderated newsgroups. I guess if RAP is
one of the few discussion places a person frequents, that person tends to
post everything here. I, too, grow tired of all the rhetoric and ranting,
and (without meaning to offend anyone) RAP is the last place I would come to
get inciteful political commentary.

Like others, I value your opinions and thoughts on audio. I'm primarily a
lurker because I often don't feel that I have much to contribute, but I do
learn a lot from folks like Mike Rivers, Harvey Gerst, Scott Dorsey, David
Morgan, yourself, and others. But (and again, no offense intended), I don't
figure any of you have spent your professional lives analyzing foreign or
domestic policy, economics, social issues, etc. I think Barbara Streisand
is an entertainer of staggering talent, but I could care less what she
thinks about world affairs. And I don't much care what RAP folks think
about the upcoming election, Dan Rather, the war in Iraq, etc. I DO care
what they think about audio, and that's what draws me here.

In the end, I've learned to just skip over the titles of threads I assume
are going to be of minimal value to me. This includes the audio-related
subjects as well. I guess I've just gotten good at filtering on the fly.

Just my thoughts...

I sympathise but there's a counter argument to that. The regular posters are
probably interested in the views of those that they know from here.

Maybe there should be an rec.audio.pro.opinion group ?

These are among the people whose posts I miss.

We are all looking for some magic bullet to deal with the problem. Might
I suggest that those of you who care, really just try your best to not
post followups to any of the real problem areas---politics, or just the
insulting stuff like Phil A.?

That's one way to lower noise. People feed on the reaction their
controversial posts create. If you ignore them, they are more likely
to go away.

Also, if you want to improve S/N the other way is to increase the signal.
Make an effort to actually post audio recording relevant material.

I know, it has all been said before. But can't we get a list going of
former RAPers we would like to see come back?

how does one subscribe to the pro-audio mailing list? what forums
are people going to -- i've checked out prosoundweb, but it seems too
fragmented . . . kinda looked into the tapeop forum, just haven't
gelled with it .. .

I used to be a fairly active participant, but something happened and I
am no longer able to post to it. I've subscribed using different
addresses and been told that I'm on the "approved poster" list and it
still doesn't like me. Must be because I'm a parrott.

And gets an average of about a post a week. When threads do
start they tend not to be just theoretical but more about
angels dancing on pins. That's what happens when it gets
down to mostly just the good ol' boys stroking each other.

No Al..I haven't. People insist that others "do" things to them and I don't
subscribe to that view. I don't "do" things to others..I live my life..it's
all your perspective..which can be controlled. I would rather have
conversations about possibility than abouthand wringing and blaming. All the
good things I can think of comes from these kinds of conversations.

George doesn't have to choose moral bankruptcy, war(fighting) or any self
delusion...how you judge that is a little murky to me..he just seems to like
being pissed..seems tiring to me.
