my nic cant read thru the switch to find the router

To clarify

I have a 4 room office with one ADSL feeding 4 rooms. The ADSL service came with a 4-port router, which doesn't provide enough LAN cable ports for 2-PCs and 4-VoIP phones. In two of the offices the router feeds an 8-port Linksys switch. I can plug any of the VoIP phones into any switch port and it connects, no problem. I can plug either PC directly into the router, and no problem. However, if I try to feed the LAN to the PC from the switch, it is as if the network interface card (NIC) in the PC can not find the router if trying to read thru the switch.

Suggestions?
