I have a 10mbps down connection, currently using a cheapy Dlink older router with 57mbps connection. I am considering getting a new router because this older Dlink has problems holding connections for newer wireless devices and VOIP. (OMG VOIP on this router is crazy bad!).

So my question is, is 300mbps necessary? is Dual band broadcast routers necessary? I watch Netflix on my IPAD often and has iphones connected to the wifi while I am at home. I have a VOIP connected to it through CAT cable and a desktop also using CAT connection.

is 300mbps necessary?

Not really but 150Mb/s router usually only run at 54Mb/s

is Dual band broadcast routers necessary?

No, but might help, since some devices can connect at 2.4MHz and others at 5MHz which could help with bandwidth traffic

How fast do the old 54mbps typically run at if the newer 150mbps runs at the older stated speed?

So you saying there is very little advantage in going from a 54mbps to a 150mbps router if the sole purpose is to get more stable download speed via wireless?
