External hard drive recommendation

I'm looking for something with a primary purpose to back up.

I was thinking DVD writers and now i'm thinking external hard drives.

I was looking at maxtor drives but the western digital external drives look better and cheaper.

As far as back up, what would you recommend?

IF you recommend dvd writer, what brand name would you recommend?

IF you recommend an external hard drive, what brand name would you recommend?

As far as external hard drives, would you recommend firewire or USB 2.0?

I really need something for backups. I don't have tons of money so thats why i was thinking external hard drive.

thanks!!!!!!!!!!!

and yes i looked at the faq and mentions nothing about external drives same with the recommended storage site.

hmmm. well if at all possible i would reccomend a 7200rpm external over a 5400 one. doesnt really matter what connection you use, allthough USB2.0 seems more common.

7200 rpm drives are rather pointless when coupled with USB or firewire. Save some cache and get a bigger 5400 RPM drive.

It's not what they tell you, its what they don't tell you!
