In the past I've taken the audio out of my Tascam DAT into a PC using
an S/PDIF card in the PC. Now I've retired that PC for a laptop, and
I can't use the S/PDIF card, so I'm looking for a way (more precisely,
a cheap way) to get the DAT output into the laptop. Thanks for any
pointers.

Mike,
Does it have to be s/pdif out ? The Echo Indigo I/O pcmcia card slots
directly into that bus on the laptop, but only takes line in...try it!
Great specs,
Ray

Any recommended brands?

As far as I know, Edirol is the only reasonably apparent manufacturer
using USB2. If you only need two channels, and particularly if you
aren't worried about 96 kHz sample rate, there's no need to use USB2.

The Digigram VX Pocket PCMCIA card has S/PDIF in and out as well as
balanced analog in and out with sufficient gain for a microphone (but
no phantom power). It's neat, sounds good, and there's one sitting on
eBay right now for an absurdly low $46 (3 days to go) Item 3750194454

I think I've seen it new for around $300.

Sound Devices USBpre. Not overly cheap, but then you get quite usable
preamps and converters as well.

I use the Tascam US-224. roughly $300, with a Tascam DA-P1. I've seen
it with a $50 rebait but they won't let you use a PO box. You find
this out after opening your product. The spdif works fine. It's "old"
USB 1 and works at 16/24bit, 44.1/48hz. (they changed the
"specification" for USB 1/2 to sell off the backlog of slow USB parts-
10mb per sec transfer is now "USB2!!!" while 100mb is some other
marketing phrase). Your laptop power supply noise will be the limiting
factor here. Mine is faultless on the battery supply, unusable with
the laptop AC switcher plugged in. Makes no difference which DAT
supply. best of luck. s.

A used MBox doesn't cost much. It'll give you S/PDIF I/O via USB, and
you'll get bonus balanced analog, mic pres and a pair of DIs thrown in.

You probably can't return a used MBox and it reportedly doesn't work
with many combinations of Sis, Via and AMD chipsets in PC land so I'd
do some research beforehand if I were you. I heard the MBox and it
sounded fine but it did crash the guy's (pro audio engineer) mac
laptop thing while he was showing off. Also, aren't you married to
Protools lite with that thing?

I'll bet you have to be really careful buying a used M-Box if you
don't know what it is and what it works with (and what it doesn't).
It's as much a key to the intro version of ProTools as it is an audio
interface. Some people sell "ProTools" without the M-Box and it
doesn't work. Then they'll sell the M-Box without the software and it
might not work with the software you have.

Doesn't Edirol or M-Audio make a simple USB S/PDIF adapter? Oh, yeah:

If you run Mac OS X, the M-box will work with other applications because
Digidesign has provided an Audio Units driver. I have it working with Logic
Express.

Good advice.

Well, just about anything can be made to crash anything, so I wouldn't
worry all that much about that incident. I've worked with plenty of
"pro" audio engineers who make perfectly good systems unstable by
screwing around with system settings (not that *I* would ever be guilty
of messing up a machine so bad I finally had to reinstall everything
from scratch to get it working again).

> Also, aren't you married to Protools lite with that thing?

I can think of worse fates than being tied to Pro Tools, but no, you're
not. The Pro Tools software *is* dependant on the Mbox, but not the
other way around. Any software on the machine can access the Mbox for
I/O.

The software license for Pro Tools is tied to the hardware device, so if
you own the Mbox I'm pretty sure you can download the software free.

Thanks for that pointer. That looks like the kind of thing I was hoping to find.

M-Audio Transit (for the S/PDIF optical). It's low priced and in our
tests we found it was bit-for-bit accurate up to 24/96.

If you need coax, you might consider the M-Audio Audiophile USB.

Both are available via our Web site.
