Hello,
For some reason my laptop has slowed down incredibly on start up. It is an HP Pavilion purchased last november and everything has been fine until 2 days ago. I started up and it took around 5 mins fo my desktop icons to show completely and then a further 2 mins before I could access any programs. I did a system recovery to before the problem started but no use. Any ideas before I take it back to the shop - its still under warranty. Tx

it could be a bad update or bad driver. try using msconfig and turn every thing off in start up. if it still boots slow you know it not something in stat up. for hardware you can run a hard drive fitness test to check your hard drive. there memtest for ram.

Stop Unwanted startup programs:

Start > Run > write msconfig > Click on StartUp tab
Deselect the programs you want to stop

Also perform the following tasks::

Scan your computer with an antivirus
Apply De-fragmentation on your system
Delete all temporary files
Run disc clean up
Fix registry errors.

Thanks for all the input. Turned out it was since I updated Microsoft Security Essentials - apparently doesn't work well with Windows 7. I have Avast anti virus which I'm happy with so I just disabled MSE.
