I would like to purchase an 80gb 7200 drive for my new comp. The best deal I have come across is IBM 76.8 Gb,Ultra ATA/100,7200 RPM for around $85. But I also see IBM 80.0 Gb,Ulta ATA/100,7200 RPM for over $100. There must be some significant differences between these drives if they can sell a 76.8gb drive for the same price as their 40gb 7200 drive?

yes... differnt drive design age's, platter densities, number of platters etc.

im figuring that the 76.8Gb drive is from the 75GXP line, which has 5 platters of 15gb each.
the 80Gb drive will most likely be from the 120GXP line, with only 2 platters of 40Gb... a big difference.

less platters = less heat, less noise
higher data density = higher data transfer rates.

plus the 75gxp line was HIGHLY UNRELIABLE. they crashed far too often. its old stock, which is why its probably so cheap.
