My God...$70 for the sg-21/17 swivel mic clip through an authorized neumann
dealer in my area! A little molded plastic, a screw and a thread! I want to
get into THAT business. Does anyone have a spare or know where I can get one
for a reasonable rate?

Try the Shure rubber doughnut shockmounts. They are very effective and fit
nicely.

ElectroVoice 311 fits well, more adaptable to other microphones and is way less
money.

If you want the Neumann one, $70.00 is the price and they are very rare. (best

That is what I'd recommend too... The model number is the A53.

The above should do the job.... I have tried the second version with the
shock mount..

Geez, I'd love to get hold of few of these. But no one carries them in
Toronto.

You go into Long and McQuade and they have a wall of different condensor
mics---but do they carry the doughnut? Do Not.

Pick up an Electro-Voice 313 or 313A shock mount (about US$35 last I saw)
and get the advantage of, well, shock-mounting. Works great with the KM
microphones, as well as many others of similar size. The Electro-Voice 311
clip, not a shock-mount, also works on KM microphones; it's a little tight
but it works.

Peace,
Paul

I agree that they're very effective (apart from their lack of a cable
clamp), but the A53M was designed for 3/4" (= 19 mm) barrels while the
KM-series Neumann microphones all had their outer sleeves strengthened
a couple of years ago, and now are all 22 mm in diameter.

The A53M is very good with 20 mm microphones such as most Schoeps models
and the AKG C 451 series. But whenever I've tried to use one with, for
example, a Neumann KM 84 (21 mm), it would often scrape the Neumann emblem
right off of the body if I wasn't careful to insert the mike from the other
end. A 22 mm microphone might not fit through at all unless a fair amount
of force was applied to it.

That's what I was going to suggest, the AT8410A shockmount is well
made, works well and is easy to use at half the price.

The Audix clips made for the D-1, D-2 and D-3 will fit the 84/184 up to
the badge, which stops the clip. AKG SA-41s will also work, as will the
SA-40 albeit a little tight. Again, the Neumann badge inhibits a number
of hard plastic clips.

the new audix clip(not the hard plastic one) you push the mic down into
from the top not slide it in the end
it will grasp the 184 at any point along its body

It does take some force, but I've never had it knock the label off.

There is a larger version of the A53, which is intended for use with SM-57s
and similarly larger microphones. That might be worth considering. But
I regularly use the A53 with the Josephson Series Six mikes which seem to
be a bit thicker than the Schoeps. Now you have me curious to actually
measure them.

They loosen up after you use them a while. Thinking about it, mine are
probably over 30 years old so that's QUITE a while....

We used some A-T clips we had lying around when we lost or broke a
couple of our KM184 clips. They fit, so you could check the A-T
catalog.

I agree, BUT:

Do NOT, I repeat, do NOT remove the screw that attaches the base to the
body. There is some gaseous, invisible and completely undetectable
substance in there that escapes when you do. After reassembly, the body
flops back and forth with no friction/resistance to hold it in place.
Spooky.
