I have been pretty unimpressed with reverb plugins..(with the
exception of Sonitus......but it still doesn't seem to have everything
I want)
Can anyone recommend a $400 hardware reverb unit that has very
natural sounding reverbs? If spending $400 on a hardware unit will
only improve my reverbs by a small amount I guess I need to save for a
higher end one.
What is everyone's thoughts on this?
Thanks TRavis

A used Sony R7. Often prefered over a Lexicon 480 on vocals, it can
sound natural and smooth where one might consider the expensive 480 a bit
artificial and grainy.

I know this doesn't answer your question but have you tried Timeworks' 4080L
and the newer ReverbX DirectX plug-in's? They are pretty awesome, especially
the newer one (ReverbX). I have also heard a lot of good things about Waves'
TruVerb but as I like the Timeworks stuff so much I haven't used it very
much.
Can't help you with the hardware, I do it all in software myself. The only
hardware reverb I use is for the headphone mix so the vocals don't sound so
dead while recording, and those units are inexpensive Alesis and ART units.

I have a Lexicon Core 32 ..with the PC 90 daughtercard..2 PCM 90 style verbs on
a PCI card...you can run it on an old PC with analog in/outs. Selling it cheap.

After good clean + complete recap I have a clean, relatively quiet, good
sounding reverb-in-a-box.
I find the EMT240 presets extremely useful, probably nothing in common with
the real thing but I like them all the same.
Easy to edit, easy to use.
My other unit is a Yamaha REV500 that does some of the stuff that the SRV330
can't; but for short reverbs, the 330 sounds better to me: the 500 has a
surprisingly long processing delay which makes it impossible to simulate
really short spaces. I prefer the 500 for very long dark tails.
I tried a few entry level Lexicons and they sound OK, but are a nightmare to
edit.
I also used an MPX-1 for a few months and it felt a bit unituitive for me,
mainly beacause it's mainly a muliFX box rather than a dedicated reverb;
sounded cool, but not as smooth as the PCM70 that was sitting right above
it. The PCM70 has that weird "grid" editing thing, but once you get it it's
quick to use. There was a TC M3000 in the same rack and I really didn't like
it. Metallic tails, unnaturally "wide", and I couldn't get around the user
interface.
All that stuff except the TC should be available for around or under 500
(the Lexis in used condition of course).

Yes I certainly agree, highly underrated.
I will probably be selling one in about two weeks, I found another one
in better physical shape, but it had to go back to have a new battery
installed.
The one I want to sell is not that rough, but the LCD could stand to
be replaced (it's bright enough, but "bleeds" a bit after it's been on
a few hours). Ironically the battery in this one (my old one) is fine,
a full 2.9 volts, the new one I got was dead as s doornail.
I'll post it here for sale prior to listing it on Fleabay, as I know
many people here appreciate the R7.

Unnaturally wide can give you room to put other things when you have a dense
mix.

Although it can sound great on speakers, lots of space, it always sounds
weird to me on headphones.
Not a big issue but still...
