Does anyone know what mic/preamp combo he used during his earlier
recordings. His voice cuts through the mix nicely.

I think it has a lot to do with Van's voice... it's sounded that way
since he sang with "Them" in the 60s.

Van's voice will cut through most any mix, regardless of mic...

It's Van's voice but much of Van's recording was done before the preoccupation
with seperate preamps and we used what the studio had. Van did a lot of
recording at the Record Plant in Sausalito which had API consoles.

Funny, when I had a board full of API pres I didn't concern myself with
wanting outboard preamps. <g>

And a Neve 8068, which is still there, & still (mostly) sounding great.

The album "Inarticulate Speech of the Heart" was made in a place called Tres
Virgos, (later Tarpan Studios) in San Rafael, CA, on an MCI console with Chips
Davis phase alignment. I don't remember the mics tho...

But what about Astral Weeks? My preference as the best sounding VM
Album. It's gotta be a tube console on that album.

Do you still have that console? I love the old Series II and own a 24/8
console that I've been refurbishing for years now. Sold it once in the
meantime and soon bought it back. I'll keep that one no matter what.

Any info on that particular Series II? Records that were recorded on it,
anything?
