Coomputer won't connect to internet or clean boot

Hello, I have an acer aspire one netbook that runs on windows xp and it's about 4 years old now. I had a virus in the computer recently and tried to completely reinstall the windows program through safe mode, but then it stopped when it needed to restart and said disk read error. next, I went ahead and attempted to remove the virus, but after removing most of it, a remnant remained and would redirect any google search. after using hitman pro to remove the virus, it would not complete the process because of the disk read error at start up, which i had learned to go around in order to use the computer. however, once i got into the computer, none of my browsers work even though the actual internet is connected to a very strong signal. rundll.exe had turned into a blank page, and now I'm afraid of doing anything to try to fix up my computer!

you should run a checkdisk on your hard drive

It's simply amazing the number of problems that are solved by simply running "chkdsk /f /v /r" once in a while. Contrary to popular belief NTFS does fragment and is subject to corruption on a regular basis.
