Samsung DDR333 CAS2.5 --> forced CAS2?

I've got a single 256MB module of Samsung DDR333 CL2.5 memory. At least I think its CAS2.5. The BIOS is set to detect its settings "by SPD" which appears to be automatic, whatever it is, so I just leave it like that.

When I change it from SPd to manual it shows the CAS latency as 2.5 so i assume thats what the latency of this module is.

Two questions.

1) How do I determine for sure what its CAS latency is? I checked the little sticker on the module, and it only says PC-2700 256 MB.

2) If it is CAS2.5 (I think it is), can I "force" it to run in CAS2? I've read that its possible but I don't know how easy it is, and I don't want to destroy my module...

P4S533 mobo (SiS645DX)
256MB DDR333 Samsung
Note: FSB is 142, with 4:5 memory divide, so RAM is running at DDR355.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I just broke down out of frustration and called the store where I bought the memory. It's CL2.5. Anyone know the answer to my second question?

I'm running my Samsung PC2700 CAS 2.5 at 170 MHz CAS 2.0 and no problem.
Memory doesn't get any damage for running at higher CAS.

You can have 2 other problems:
1)Instability: just go back to CAS 2.5
2)Fail to boot up: clear the CMOS and OK

However I don't think you are going to have them. Samsung PC2700 is known for running at CAS 2.0 without problems

Well. It seems CAS2 isn't as important as some people might imply...

I was able to overclock my memory to 177.5MHz before (DDR355). Once going to CAS2, it would not make it more then 10 seconds into 3dmark without crashing unless i ran it at CL2/166MHz, exactly. At that level it didn't perform any better...

166MHz CAS2:
-10129 3dmarks (3dmark 2001, default settings)
-78.269 fps in Unreal Tournament 2003 flyby benchmark

177.5MHz CAS2.5:
-10709 3dmarks
-78.28 fps in UT2003 bench

So its actually slightly better on my system to go for higher clock at CAS2.5...

Any comments?

yeah i've read that the difference between cas 2 and 2.5 is not nearly as much as the difference in mhz that can be gained by choosing 2.5 instead of 2, your experience supports my readings. thanks. that's my comment
