Network icon showing disabled red cross sign.

I have reinstalled windows 7 on my laptop. the problem is that the wi-fi internet is not working anymore. The network icon in the system tray shows a cross sign with a red color. I cant seem to be able to find a solution. Tried all the solutions listed in the forum. When i connect the lan cable directly into the laptop the internet works fine. But as soon as i remove it the cross sign again comes and i cant have internet access. I am having an Atheros Ar9285 Wireless Network Adapter installed in my device manager and everything is fine there with no ? or ! marks. I am using a Belkin router with in built modem. Please can someone suggest a solution. Is there a possibility of any hardware defect.
