What would you recommend, under 1000 dollars. 100 watts per channel would
probably be about the right size.

Do you need level controls and balanced inputs? If so, look at the low end
Hafler models. Even the cheap Chinese ones that Hafler makes will be a big
step up from the Alesis. If you don't, consider mid-grade home stereo amps
like the offerings from Adcom and Parasound... you get a lot more for the
dollar but you don't get balanced inputs. And these should be way, way
under a thousand dollars. For a thousand you should even be able to find
a used Aragon.

I can tell you from a lot of first hand experience, the NS1000M's need a really sweet sounding
amp to sound their best. Among solid state amps, I would very strongly recommend an old
McIntosh MC2105($700-900 avg price) or MC2505($450-800 avg), with second place recommendation
to the Nakamichi Stasis amps, PA-5($350-450 avg.), PA-7($600-700 avg), PA-5AII($550-750 avg) or
PA-7AII($900-1100 avg). The beryllium mids & tweeters are extremely low distortion & extremely
fast, but this does mean that they are *extremely* revealing of deficiencies in the driving
electronics. If you don't mind a slight sacrifice in bass tightness/punch, I'd even more
strongly recommend a good tube amp, such as a conrad-johnson MV-52($800-$1200 avg) or Premier
4($600-1000 avg), or McIntosh MC225($700-1200 avg), pair of MC30's($900-1400/pr avg) or
MC40's($900-1400/pr avg).

So there we have our definitive answer; Phil Allison endorses the Alesis RA-150
as a useful amplifier. I think we can measure the rest of his judgements by
this particular post. Sorry Phil, you lose on this one.
The Alesis RA-150 was Alesis' pathetic attempt to design an amp in-house, so
they wouldn't hafta keep paying royalties to the outside designer of the RA-100.
While the RA-100 wasn't the worlds greatest amp, it wouldn't destroy everything
around it if it went out (which rarely happened). The Alesis-designed amps are
considered a joke by the rest of the audio industry.
And no, Phil, I'm not gonna get into a name calling match with you. It would be
a waste of my time.

If its anything like a RA-100, its all discrete transistors.

Even Lenny Cohen is splitting his sides at that one.
