I've just been reading about this game and that it's by Tim Schafer of Grim
Fandango, Full Throttle, and Day of the Tentacle fame

Anyone played this, is it any good?

You can download the (huge!) demo. It's a 3D platform game, definitely
NOT an adventure. That said, it's a lot of fun, and has something of a
complex and occasionally dark storyline, very atypical of platformers.

Yep - as long as you can handle the 'platformer' aspects of it, this is one
*excellent* game, down to the voice acting and the writing. Great stuff.
Give the demo a shot.

OK, what does "platform" or "platformer" game mean? Haven't heard
this term before.

Third person perspective running/jumping/ducking type of game. Lode
Runner would have been one of the earliest ones. Many of the old
playstation games (Sonic the Hedgehog, if I remember) and such were
what really defined this genre.

I'm not a big platform fan, but Psychonauts was definitely fun!

Hmm, not that it matters terribly but I think you're getting your games and
consoles mixed up.

If anything the Mario games pretty much defined the console platform genre.
Sonic came later and was a genesis and dreamcast consoles exclusive until
the demise of the DC when it started appearing everywhere including the PC.

And IIRC lode runner was mostly a puzzle type game with some platforming
elements, but my memory is hazy and I may be thinking of a different game
altogether.

On that we agree 110%, Psychonauts is a very strong candidate for Game of
The Year in my book - simply amazing stuff.

Thanks, got it. It also means very hard to control with a keyboard +
mouse. It's a game written for consoles or game controllers.

I'll pass on Psychonauts.

I had no problems with using the keyboard and mouse for it (although
I did remap some of the movements). Honestly, download and give it a
try--it surprised me, it might do the same for you.

Entirely possible. As I've said, I never was much of a platform fan.

Ah well, I stand corrected.

You might be thinking of 'return to lode runner,' or whatever it was called.
WAY back in the olden days, lode runner was a 2D platform game. It was a
side-view, non-scrolling sort of thing, but spiritually it was similar.

Hmm. I need a faster computer before it gets that recommendation from me.

I found kb + mouse to be unusable when I tried the demo. But on the
other hand, I only tried that configuration for a couple of seconds.
Then I picked up my joystick and had a lot of fun. The game is not
released in Sweden yet, but I've ordered it from abroad.

I like platformers, though. Rayman (2 & 3) is among my favourite
games, and I've also recently tried (and liked) the demo of Gish.
( http://www.chroniclogic.com/gish.htm ) But now I'm getting way
off topic, so I'll stop typing.

No doubt. I'm a die hard KB+mouse fan from way back but I only started
enjoying Pnauts once I plugged in an old usb saitek controller that was
laying around here - a remnant from the PoPersia Sands of Time game which I
also found impossible to play using the KB+M combo.

Please don't. At least download the demo and give it whirl if you have
broadband, it just might surprise you as Colin said.

Exactly what happened to me. And get ready for one hell of joy ride once
the game arrives :)

Also loved the Rayman's but Gish was surprisingly disapointing to me after
all the hype, it reminded of much better SNES games from 10 years ago.

I could well be, even though I wasnt aware of any sequels until you
mentioned it. The one I'm thinking came out for the c64 I think and had the
player going up and down ladders with baddies all over trying to catch you.
At the time I was hopelessly addicted to M.U.L.E. and LR quickly vanished
off my radar screen.

Come to think of it, I can't remember when was the last time a game got me
totally hooked like some of those in the olden days... I really can't...
XCOM maybe?... How sad, either I'm too old and jaded or the games being
released just don't amount to much anymore.

Probably a little of both.

Bah, humbug.

Sam
and Max? Or even Full Throttle, one of the "easier" ones? Anybody?

IDDQD - God mode in DOOM !!!
All Action Games have cheat codes .
God mode , all weapons , full armor , invincible , clip mode ,
invisible - you name it .

A little walkthrough or hint here and there for adventure games , when
one is REALLY stuck do not really matter .

I use them if I am stuck for more than 1 week .

Yup. There aren't many adventure games where I haven't consulted
a walkthrough or hints at least once (usually it's because of
some inventory item I missed, though sometimes my problem is
that something didn't trigger due to a game bug)

But with action/adventures, I usually have to use cheats the
whole way through. I'm too slow and I can't aim worth a $@%#.
