I'm just looking for some opinions and insight into picking a 40x cd burner. I'm looking to get one of the 'budget' drives as I really don't want to fork over significant cash with dvd-r close to being affordable.

The 3 drives I am seriously considering are:

40x Lite On = $89 Cdn
40x LG = $89
40x Asus = $99

Any insight into differences between these drives, experiences with them, etc. if appreciated!

Cheers!

the lite-on would be my choice as it has the best reputation among the 3 listed for copying cd's in raw format I don't know the conversion or if they ship to the great white north but the 40x lite-on is 53.00 USD at newegg at the moment

I have to root for the LG, as much of a cheap company that they are. Lastnight I burned 35 cds with my 40x (IN A ROW) and not even the slightest hickup. I didn't even have to restart my computer at all. So i would go with the LG, cheap, and you know it works, cause I said so.! :)

own five lite-on within the last two years, never have a problem with a singer one. i love the burn-proof technology, never waiste a cd with buffing underun like my 8/4/32 plextor.

On a lot of computers, CD burning is a very strenuous task. If you have ever tried using lets say an 8x cd burner on a p3 550 then eventually it uses so much of the resources, it just can't do it anymore. causing you to restart. Maybe you haven't run into this, but I have many times, with a ton of computers at work.

I agree the liteon is a nice drive, but it is a cheapo drive. It may work well, but I still believe you usually get what you pay for.

at 8x my lite-on 32 overclocked to 40x uses only 7% cpu resources

i burned about 40 in a row with my plextor 40x cdr
not a problem, in fact ever since i got it, i didnt screw up a single cd, and i've burned about 200-300 cds (at 40x speed) :)
its expensive, i must say, and loud as a jet thats taking off (when its burning i can hear it in the basement!), but...0 cds screwed up. and i was told i'd have about 1 bad cd in 100 burned...BS...not with plextor

That sounds more like an operating system problem or memory leak with the software.

Im getting a black 48x24x48x from liteon soon to go into my black case.

lite-on is the way to go. whoever says that lite-on is a cheap drive and lg isn't hasn't been to wal-mart lately.my last drive was an LG I jad two different software programs not recognize the cd-rw roxio 5 platinum and cdr-win 5.0 I bought it cheap (at wal-mart) and sold it cheaper (to a sucker). I bought me a lite-on haven't had a poblem yet.
