A friend who is stuck with an apple mac need to train up on audio
editing software. Is there anything close in the mac world to Adobe
Audition, since she will ultimately need to convert to Audition?

Two things about Sound Designer: you gotta have a Digi card for it to
work. (Buy an Audiomedia 3 card on ebay for a $100, which will also run
older versions of Protools.) And you also have the pain-in-the-ass
floppy authorization hurdle if your Mac ain't got no floppy.
But SD is da KING of mono or 2 track editing. Especially when paired
with MasterlistCD. I got a old Mac 8500 in my control room just for
these 2 apps. They are so damn reliable!

If you want to run Audition, buy some hardware that runs it. A
computer is merely a tool for running software. And they're dirt
cheap now.
