Hard drive for laptop

My HP laptop has a 20GB 4200RPM HD. I want to upgrade it.
I am thinking about using a external fireware HD case (with a WD 80 GB, 7200rpm, 8M cache HD)(plug & play too) or should I just swap (upgrade) the internal HD to a 40 GB. Which way will be faster? It seems like a transfer rate vs RPM question. Thanks

  1. All 2,5" drives I have seen have a much lower transfer rate than 3,5" drives. Probably because they are designed for laptops only, and here power is a scarse resource. So an external modern high performance drive will be faster.
