Not exactly a Hardware question but I need to look wherever I can. I accidently deleted the wrong partition along with a different one that I meant to delete and then put one partition in their place. I did not format though, just merely made the partition. My question is, is there a way I can recover the files from the one I meant to keep? I ran Knoppix which is a Linux that runs off a cd and I could see the file names and the folder names but couldnt open them. There were a bunch of other files/folders with ??????'s as their names so I'm just thinking it cant follow the links or something. Can someone help me out or at least point me somewhere. even another, more appropriate board/list. Anything would be great. Thanks

If you just repartitioned, but haven't written anything else to the disk, you have a good chance of recovering your data. What you need to do is to create the partitions exactly as they were before you repartitioned. Basically, you'd need to restore the original Master Boot Record partition tables. Here's more info on the MBR.

If the partitions you deleted were "logical drives" in an extended partition, it gets a bit trickier. You'll need to locate the beginning of the extended partition. It has same kind of partition table as the actual MBR.

Since you have Linux boot CD, I suppose you could use 'dd' to backup the partitioning you have now as the first thing. Then, you could use the partitioning prog you previously used to create the original partitions to rewrite the partition tables to to original. Be very careful when messing around with partitions and 'dd', though.

If you're not comfortable doing all this "manually", you could use Partition Magic or Partition Recovery for deleting/undeleting partitions.
