Anyone have the Stereophile test LP

This is kind of unbelievable to me , but last night we were using the Stereophile test LP to
check to see why the output of the Grado- The Reference cartridge seemed to favor the right
side of the record a little. (turns out this all depends on the record) I just need a little
confirmation here cause either I need to be checked back into the nuthouse or the Stereophile
people announce the left side and right side backwards.

We tested from phono stage input by disconnecting one side and assuring the side we think is
right is not left.
We also tested the test record on an old thorens/sumiko player and it is still on the wrong
side.
There is no way to cross wires on the cartridge or the turntable(s)

Anyone else notice this?

It is at my buddies house. I did not look at it real good the other night but could swear it
said stereophile real big on it as I viewed it from across the room. I will be seeing it again
on Saturday and will photo it and confess if I have confused your organization with another.
I bet this is another exercise in making an ass out of myself. I seem to be getting ahead of
myself in that regard. If one of these goobers hooked up the cartridge backward I will
probably be answering from my jail cell.

I would like to Scott, but the reality is that doing it right is not
easy. And there are still great test LPs available, like the ones
produced by Denon.

Indeed you are correct John. The record I used was the Stereo Revidw Test Record SRT 14A.

Have you considered examing the groove under a magnifier? IIRC, the inner groove
wall is the left channel. If only one channel is modulated at a time, you should
have no trouble seeing which wall it is.

No, but this is an interesting sugestion. On the cartridge if we brush the stylus from the
center of the turntable toward the outside edge it appears to favor the right side and vice
versa. I also checked panning of a few CD's that I know we have the LP for. I will first be
checking these on the LP version and if CD and LP check out we will lend back the test LP to
the guy who lent it to us. The guy who lent it to us says he has cut acetate on a Neuman lathe
back in the day maybe he can confirm the groove information with a loop. I will keep you
posted.

Okay here is my latest entry into the Humble Pie eating contest. Yes I am becoming quite
accustomed to the taste.



The story starts almost a month ago. I am over at the vinyl vault with my buddy HT trying to
get a handle on why the turntable seems to favor the right hand side of the audio. Did it
sound like that? No we saw it that way while trying to record a couple of records to digital.
Using the free VST plug-in Elemental Audio Inspector we could see it on the panorama analyzer.
It also seemed to pull right on an old mono Sinatra album. Long story short two reasons for
the pulling. 1) noisy tube in the right channel putting out a lot of very infrasonic noise, 2)
depends on the record.



In the mean time another goober brings over a test record. I forgot my glasses that night so I
can barely see the huge title but think it says Stereophile but it really says Stereo Review
Test Record STR 14a. Sorry John Atkinson.



Last Tuesday we play the record. The announcer says left channel, sound comes out of the
right. Well here is the answer.



Side one track one is a channel id sweep. Side two is a crosstalk test ( or something like
that) We are listening to side 2 but hell I don't know I cant read the cover 48 point type let
alone the teeny track info on the cover and the label on the LP. We stick it on and it says
left channel out of both sides then the signal plays out of the right track. Then the
announcer says right channel and the signal plays out of the left track.



I jump up and down saying the system is wired backwards. But I guess the test puts a loud
signal in the channel not under test and then you are to listen to the channel under test to
see if it has audible/measurable cross talk. So you hear the announcer say left channel left
channel out of both speakers, then turn the ballance control all the way to the left and
listen for crosstalk in the left speaker.



I sure hope they have some whipped cream for my pie.
