So i work on Unreal engine and at a certain task i get ran out of memory error. my windows uses around 900mb of ram while only background apps are working - is there a way to drop it around 500mb

this is the error i get ( i have 4gb installed on 32bit windows sees 3573.

thanks a lot for the reply but that was not my question.

i know how much ram 32bit addresses. I just ask if there is way to decrease the ram windows uses when its idle

Yes by stopping/closing services/processes.

I have Vista 64bit and my system uses 1.5GB when idle.

I can't understand why someone would buy a 32bit version of Win7, 64bit cpu's have been out for TEN YEARS.

exittoexist, you should read up on Superfetch.
That being said, killing any unnecessary background process will help. I think the visuals like Aero are mostly handled by your graphics card but turning it off might help a bit. Good luck!

If u will get it down, it will start to choke and freeze.

Best advice would be to get more RAM and W7 x64

2nd Best advice would be to remove all the apps that u don't use

and stop processes to apps like iTunes and such.

Not to disable them, just to make them start in "manual" mode, so u don't restrict usage.

Can u post screenshot of your processes from your process explorer?

Post just the left side ... So we can see what can be turned off.

The nice thing is if its a Home premium or above version of Windows you should be able to use the same CD key for an X64 bit installation since Microsoft made most of the keys interchangeable between the two.

use msconfig and turn off itunes/google/java update and any other program running in start up other then your mouse drivers and your anti virus program. also look in your anti virus program to see if you can turn it off or shut it down.

Be aware that 32bit windows counts the memory on the video card as part of the total. I understand what you are asking but I too think that in the end the best way is to move to 64 bit OS.
