From my "fix it? archives
Usually, deleting and reinstalling the gameport drivers does the trick.
To delete your gameport drivers:
Click on start-settings-control panel.
Double click on system
Click on device manager
Double click on sound, video, and game controllers.
Highlight any mention of a gameport or a joystick and click "remove"
Reboot the computer.
When windows reboots, it will reinstall the devices you just removed
provided your gameport or soundcard are plug and play.
If not, you may have to add them manually. Either way, make sure you
have your Windows 95/98/ME CD handy.
Advanced users only:
You may want to go further by deleting the registry entry for your gameport.
This will perform a more perfect uninstall of the driver.
Note that by following these instructions you do so at your own risk.
To perform a registry edit on your gameport:
Click on Start, run and type in regedit
Double click on HKEY_local_machine
Double click on System
Double click on CurrentControlSet
Double click on control
Double click on Media Resources
Single click on joystick
Press delete on your keyboard to delete this key
Now, reboot and let Windows re-detect your sound card's gameport.

The last and most common cause of this error message is the existence
of more than one controller in Gaming Options.
In most situations you can only have one controller listed in the
Gaming Options control panel. This same device must also exist under
ID Controller #1 in the advanced tab. If you have more than one
controller listed you must delete the one currently not plugged
into the computer. That will fix the problem.
