After a comparison with the A/D in the 002 and a "name" outboard converter,
we found the differences pretty indistinguishable. I think the 002 converters
are quite a bit better than those on the 001. There, I'm using an RME A/D
converter and bypassing the 001 stuff.

I agree about the A/D in the 002. The converters sound fine for almost all
intents and purposes.
I could see someone who records purist acoustic music feeling the need for
something a touch smoother in the high end, but I can't really see someone
who's doing that kind of recording being drawn to using an 002 in the first
place.
In my experience I find that there is a small but noticeable
improvement when using my apogee converters (Rosetta) over the digi
002's .... especially with cymbals and acoustic guitar.

A studio I used recently used a Frontier Designs Tango 24 to add an
extra eight inputs. It sounded fine to me.

There's a Behringer unit that some people use. It does D/A as well,
which might be handy or not. It seems to work fine. If I was going
to buy something along these lines, I'd probably look at the Digimax
LT. The Presonus stuff seems a little more solidly built to me, but I
haven't done any direct comparisons with the Behringer. What's your
budget anyway? That makes a big difference as far as what kinds of
products people can recommend.
