I spent a few hours tonight listening to a stereo syetem where the
speaker were behind me. It sounded really great and there as somehting
interesting about the imaging. Has anyone here ever tried mixing with
the monitors behind you, but set up correctly so that panning matches
etc.?
Are there any reasons why this would be a huge problem?

I don't know about "huge", but the way the human pinna is shaped, and the fact
that people tend to face the source of sounds they are trying to hear leads me
to think the human hearing system is better suited at critically judging sounds
coming from the front.
