Hi all,
Hopefully I am not posting this in the wrong forum:) I have been considering
an Ipod, but just recently a friend told me about his mini disc player.
Sounds interesting but I haven't done any looking around yet so I thought
I'd post here. Where would the sweet spot be right now in terms of
price/performance? Do they all have USB connectivity? Do any models have a
FM tuner built in?
Any advice or websites would be appreciated.
Thanks
Gary

http://www.sonystyle.com will have many models, some refurbished, some new.
Ebay is also a good source. I love my portable MD player and I think ATRAC3
file compression sounds significantly better than MP3 file compression...
but that's my personal intrepretation. If you go to Sonystyle.com, you'll
be able to find a bunch of info on a bunch of different models. I think
they even offer comparison charts among the different models.

I've read reviews that say the JVC walkman units have a better low frequency
response, but haven't listened to a JVC to see for myself.

Though the space capacity of a 60-80 GB Ipod largely isn't an issue, you get
unlimited capacity with the NetMD walkman given the removable media AND you
can record to most of them in analog as well as via USB connectivity.

Most of the NetMD walkmans (walkmen?) come with USB connectivity and I think
there is a model or two with an AM/FM tuner (or at least FM).

I'm sure you're going to hear a lot of good stuff about Ipods, I just
thought I'd offer you my perspective. I hope this is helpful.

There's a web page devoted to Minidisk technology (of course) -
http://www.minidisk.org

They keep up on all the latest models and developments.

While many MDs have a USB port, there's an anti-distribution (a more
friendly term than "anti-piracy" ) "feature" built in to the minidisk
personal recorders that doesn't let you copy a recording as a file
from the player to a computer unless the file came from that computer.
You can copy a CD to the MD from your computer via the USB port, and
can copy that file back on to the computer, but you can't make a live
recording and transfer it, as a file, to your computer. You can, of
course, play it as audio and transfer it real-time. The philosophy
behind this nonsense is that you'll record a concert, transfer the
file to your computer, and make it available to the whole world
through a file sharing network. Users object, but big corporations who
control the hardware are powerful, and own the record companies whose
artists they believe would be hurt by such distribution.

Most audio profeessionals don't care much for the Minidisk recording
process because it throws away data that might represent things that
are musically audible in the interest of saving disk space. There's a
new MD recording system that can record uncompressed on a larger
capacity disk, but at this point, it's mostly a curiosity, and those
of us who want a portable recorder that can record in a standard audio
format are going to disk-based recorders such as the now discontinued
but still available Creative Labs Nomad Jukebox 3.

20G refurbs are now $139.99 on eBay (direct from Creative and with a 30-day warranty.)
