Error message

I am new to computers. I have a Toshiba laptop with windows 7 and all has been going great but after saving several DVDs ofold family films I went to my email when I returned I keep getting (windows media player error)and can no longer open any files ie. goolge.. also says movie maker doesnt support the selected file type..
