I still have the first reel to reel recorder I ever owned, and the second,
and the third...
None of these are currently operating. The grease has dried up, the motors
have spider webs in them.
All were used intensely in their day and all worked when I put them up.
Recorder 1: "Sony TC-270" 1/4 track, 7" reels, 7.5/3.75/1.875 ips, sound-
on-sound, built-in amplifier and separate speakers, unbalanced mic preamps
on 1/8" inputs. Worked fine when put away, but frozen with age. Not used
since about 1976.
Recorder 2: "Akai X-200D" 1/4 track, 7" reels, 7.5/3.75/1.875 ips, auto-
reverse, CrossField heads, moveable head assembly for tracks 1&3, 1&4, 2&3,
unbalanced mic inputs on 1/4" inputs. Last time I used this it had a noisy
IC in one channel. IIRC, it was a proprietary IC and not available then
(c. 1980)
Recorder 3: "Pioneer RT-1020" 1/4 track, 10" reels, 7.5/3.75 ips, 2 or 4
track playback, unbalanced mic inputs on 1/4" inputs, 3 bias settings, 2
EQ. Used until about 1983.
