power consumption of ram

Anyone knows about what's the average power on these different SDRAMs - SDR, DDR, RDRAM for a particular sizes?
Thanks.
 
Dunno about the others, but SDRAM will need approx 8W per 128MB.

how were you able to determine this? Is there custom circuits that allow you to find power consumption of the subcomponents in the system?

You could look up the datasheets on the manufacturers homepage. You probably need to look for the ones for the individual chips and do the math yourself.

RAM uses almost all of your memory. The only thing that uses more memory is your hard drive. Your motherboard uses hardly any memory at all. ;-)

I've seen a table for estimating the power consumption of a high end PC at

where each 128Mb DDR memory stick uses 10W! Is that true? If so, is it proportional to the total Mb of the stick? 256Mb would take 20W and 512Mb 40W? It seems to be too much power to be dissipated from that small surface. And what's the correlation when the memory is overclocked? Why did Tom's use the 5V to get the power consumption instead of 2.5V, what is the standard for DDR memories?

seems resonable...

yes, as a general rule: twice as much of the same type memory, twice as much to power it

Depends on how succesful you are in keeping the memory more busy due to the overclock...Hmm, interesting question, hah hah did that make any sense?

I assume that the 2.5V supply is derived off the 5V supply, and Tom's was including the RAMs power supply losses as part of the total RAM subsytem losses. Seems logical if you believe the assumption.
