i did have a mobo that had dual channel raid(albatron px845g pro II), i striped accross two identical disks. that mobo died, i now havean albatron px845pe pro II it seems impossible to get the controller to recognise two paralel ata drives, and i suspect that as the documentation hints it is not possible (tho the albatron site says different)
My problem is this: i have all my docs etc on the two drives. i really need to get this data off. is there any way of accessing this data (perhaps a software raid) or would it be possible to image the disks, restart with a clean install with the hd's just on standard ide channels, then when i can get hold of a board that does support raid properly copy the drive images back and start again as i had previously had the machine set up. i really need to get the machine uop and running by the end of the day raid or no raid. so i need to now if its possible to save any of the data on these disks or what my options are.
hope this makes some sense and someone can offer a little advise.
many thanks.

Ouch. Thats a hard one. By now you have discovered one of the real flaws of RAID0: Although two arrays are set up with the same stripesize, how data actually is manipulated and striped across the disks is controller dependent. Even the controller bios can influence this. So if you change controller or even update the bios you may be left with an invalid array.
I suspect this is what happened. As far as I can see the only possible way to get hold of your data is to connect the drives to a mobo with same controller and bios version.

Just to be sure: Have you tried swapping the drives? Ofcourse, if you swap them the controller cant make heads or tails of the data.

You can, as you suggest, save the data for a later recovery attempt by making a raw disk to disk copy. But Im not sure which program can be trusted to do this correctly. I think Norton makes some interpretations of the underlying filesystem. This will obviously fail if attempted on a disk from an array. In any case for a disk to disk copy to work you need a disk of at least the same size. And if you have those drives, you can just as well use them and store you RAIDed drives for a later recovery attempt.

Can you provide a link to the contradictionary information on the web, you refer to. I would like to read it.

i have tried both drives under every configuration you can imagine, jumpers location on the cable, etc. if either one is plugged in anywhere on the current controller then it detects that drive, however if you plug both in it still detects just the one drive depending on wich is set to master or slave and if both set to master it still only detects one. what your getting at is even if this raid conroller worked with two drives, chances are i still could not read my data written by another controller, i assume there's no way of doing this by software at all? so basically i must start again and maybe scrap using raid altogether. a shame when i spent extra to get it.
as to the links: http://www.albatron.com.tw/product/PX845PE_Pro_II.php for the board specs from albatron where it says words to the effect of one raid 0,1 channel supporting up to two devices, however in the promise controller manual (i cant find a link for this one though) it says mainboard supports up to three raid devices 9(one paralell ATA and two serial ATA) also it says things like 'the controller will not accept any slave devices on the raid channel only master devices will be found(implying the need for two drives set to master, which does not work) there are a few places that refer to drives(plural) in the setup guide however i feel these are simply translation errors. thanks very much for your help. it looks as if my data is lost. im sure a wise man says back up more often, and the annoying thing is if it had been one day later i would have had a backup. never mind.

Hey, wait a second. From your second description it sounds like you have a different problem than I thought. You havent actually reached the point where the controller attempts to identify the array. As I understand it, there is some kind of error so that the controller cannot recognise two drives simultaneously.
If I understand you correctly this will also prevent you from setting up a new array. It appears that there is something wrong with the RAID controller and you should RMA the motherboard.
Regarding the specs, you cant always compare what is written in the mobo manual, and what is written in the controller manual. The controller may have some features that is not supported on your mobo.

Dont give up on your data just yet.

so do you think (even though its a different promise controller) that if the mobo worked it would be able to reckognise an existing array?
it does seem that it would be pointless to have an array that only worked with serial and parralel drives similtaneously(surely they would be very different just by there very nature and not create a great raid array)
thanks very very much for your help.

Perhaps. But its not 100% certain. As long as you havent been able to make the controller recognise both drives simultaneosly, you dont know if it will work. Hopefully, promise makes their controller with some amount of backwards compatability.

I have recently changed to a new mobo and newer promise raid controller I had no problems. Have you checked your bios settings to make sure controller is enabled? From my experience I would also say defective mobo if not bios settings.for instance boot up device should be hdd-0 or raid and udma channels are turned on. oh, and for your info I went from the promise raid 20265 controller to the promise raid 20276 controller using two maxtor 80 gb ata133 harddrives.

hey, I also forgot to add that you do need to have both hard drives on seperate channels and they both need to be masters. I haven't tried adding other devices but my mobo book says it will only accept harddrives if you combine a third and or forth drive to the raid you then make them slaves.
