Greetings,

I know I'm a couple of years behind the curve here, but how do I know which
patch version I need to download for Lock On?
Thanks for your time,

Joe

Start LockOn. Look at the Altimeter on the front screen, it will say
there what current version you have in a small rectangular box.
Now you should know which patch to download to bring the game up to
1.02.

Kind of expensive for a patch, huh?

1.1 Flaming Cliffs is an expansion / add-on and does not require either 1.01
or 1.02 patches over the 1.0 install.

Of course, it'll need it's own patch(es).

Mmmh. There is something fishy going on there. Either this LOMAC gold is
what EBGames says it is and the price tag is veeeery good, or, most
probably, someone at EBGames, UBI,... goofed (see the customer preview).

If the former, those who bought Flaming Cliffs before the PayPal
problems will be understandingly annoyed (a bit of an understatement,
for PC'ness sake).

If the latter, I can see a lot of angry customers going ballistic. The
sad thing is that even if ED is not connected to this (a reasonable
assumption), they will get flak anyway because of that. Not in LOMAC's
best interests. :(

Apparently, LOMAC GOLD is not authorized. Hmmmm. Anyways, clearly not
Version 1.1 Flaming Cliffs.

So where can I buy the "official" version of the "unofficial expansion" to
LO-MAC: Flaming Cliffs?

So now there's an unofficial version of an unofficial expansion and an
official version of an unofficial expansion. When's the official version of
an official expansion coming? LOL.

It says "pre-order" but I thought it was supposed to be available already?

Last word from the naturalpoint bloke was 12th May. But I'm surprised Ubi
haven't stamped upon this "western release by the back door". I thought it
was against the original agreement by which ED could release addons.

Fingers crossed it'll happen though. Of course if they only
(eventually!) get it back available online it's more of an attricative
proposition now with 15 StarForce activations instead of the original 5.

I was thinking the same thing about UBI squishing this plan, that is why I
pre-ordered the CDROM the first day and then sent Naturalpoint an email
encouraging them to see this through.

I'm not crazy about the current solution of "get a key from our server to
load your software" that the FC download provides. Granted, ED says they're
going to support their product and not stop licensed users from using the
software (which the LOMAC newsgroup seems to reflect), but I can't seem to
get support on WW2 Fighters from Janes/EA anymore. If WW2 fighters had this
version of Starforce, I'd have been forced to throw it away years ago - what
a shame that would be since it ran like a dog on my system when it was first
released (sound familiar?) and looks and runs great on my system now. With
the frequency that sims come out (not many and slow at that) and the
frequency that we upgrade our systems (I tend to upgrade annually), I'm not
thrilled about being limited on the number of installs I can perform. Face
it, ED isn't Microsoft and if Janes/EA can die almost overnight with two
promising titles in development (A-10 & that other WW2 sim (which was later
released by Xicat and bombed)) then we shouldn't be too optomistic about
anyone in this business being around for any period of time.

I'm supporting ED by buying the CDROM version and I hope them long life and
many more products because for me, LOMAC is exactly the kind of sim I enjoy
to spend my time on.

Now, hopefully I can get FC before someone feels they aren't making enough
money from me (i.e. Ubi).

I don't think anyone is. I'm certainly not, but I suspect it's a model
we're going to have to get used to in an age where broadband will
increasingly allow developers to have the upper hand instead of
publishers. In theory that should allow niche products like LOMAC to find
a viable market the same way X-Plane has*.

I'm a lot happier with LOMAC 1.1 since they increased the number of
activations from 5 to 15. That feels like enough that I don't have to
worry about it. As for the more distant future, I would imagine that if ED
went under they & StarForce would find a way of unlocking things
completely. But -- as you say -- I'd still rather have the CD and it's
local StarForce protection as a guarantee I'll always have the option of
playing it. That's why I intend buying the CD as well. I never did get
around to buying a 2nd copy of LOMAC itself, but now the bulk of the
money's going straight to ED I'm a lot happier about multiple purchases.

Andrew McP

PS talking of X-plane, I just went to take a look at the site and
discovered I'm a little out of touch with what it looks like!

http://www.x-plane.com/v8shots.html

Things appear to have come along a little since last time I looked at the
demo. I find myself wondering if it handles landscapes like that any
better than LOMAC, which still chokes quite badly over built-up areas.
