i just built a new computer w/this mobo and i installed the promise raid controller. i'm getting an (i) in the device manager (windows 2000) is this because i don't have any raid configuration setup? it's enabled in the bios so i can use the ide 3,4 but i'm not useing the ports, but i will be soon and i'm only using 1 hd drive.
You get what in the device manager? What do you mean by (i)? Its probably because you havent installed ony drivers for the RAID controller.
If you right-click on the controller and select properties, you should get the device status. What does it say here?

ok let me explain in detail. after installing the os. i put in the gigabyte cd to install things like the chipset drivers, nic card drivers, adobe acrobat etc. i got 2 yellow circle sign w/"i" in it: one w/an "unknown
device" and the other a raid controller. i deleted the unknow device and then restarted w/the gigabyte disk in the drive. i let it do the search and the "unknown device" listing went away. then i installed the driver for the
promise raid controller. i restarted the machine and then checked the device manager. i have a listing for the promise raid controller but the yellow circle sign w/"i" in it next to it. when i saw this. i deleted the promise
raid and then rebooted and i let it search the gigabyte disk for the driver just in case i installed the wrong one and but its still there. on startup the raid device come up but when it doesn't find any raid configurations it simply contuines and boots into windows 2000.
my question is this. is the reason i'm seeing the yellow circle w/the 'i' next to the promise raid controller in the devicemanager because i don't have any raid configurations set-up in the bios?
Well. Im not really sure. I dont think I ever seen that icon before. Doesnt device manager provide some additional information if you select 'properties' of the controller?

Hammer was right. The "i" (should be "!" instead?) means you havent installed any drivers for the RAID controller. Anyway, if you are not using IDE3/4 and RAID, you should disable it in the bios. And you wont get any "!" again when you install o/s.
your right about the icon, sorry about that. but what it is next to is the driver i just installed. at the beginning it simply said "raid controller" and after i went to the cd and installed the promise raid controller from the cd it now said "promise raid controller" so i must have installed something. anyway i'll disable it, since i'm not going to use at all. i just hope doing so does not disable the ide 3,4 since by x-mas i'm going to be using them.
If you disable the RAID controller, you disable it completely. Hence IDE port 3+4 will disappear.

when i meant diabling it i meant in windows, not in the bios or does diabling the raid controller in windows also diable it in the bios? i think i'll contact gigabyte and see what they say about it.
Its ok just to disable it in windows. You will still be able to use with non-raided disks.
