Any thoughts on these mics? I am looking for an (affordable) pair of
multipattern LDCs for vocals, acoustic guitar, drum overheads.
I had been leaning towards the AT4050, but I just became aware of the
ADK TL. Everyone says the AT4050 is good, but no one seems too excited
about it. I want a mic that will be a good choice for most male
vocals. I have also thought about 414s, but I want something that is
not overly bright. I want a full woody midrange for drum OH and
guitars.
My only other large condensers are an AT3035 (clean but bland/small
sounding), and an MXL V67G (colorful, but very sibilant and distorted
on the top end)

For drumset over-heads and hihats get the 4041, or the 4051a. Small
diaphram mics, seem to work much better than large diaphram for drumset
overheads, and hihats.

Why LDCs?

How many negative reviews have you seen of the AT4050?
The 4050 is seen in regular use at a fair number of places which can afford (and often have) more expensive mics.

The ADK is also a Shanghai style mike, much like the V67 in overall
design but with slightly better electronics.

Completely different design too... TL for starters... means tranformerless.
You probably mean the old A51 Type V, and that would be correct.

From one Ty to another...
The 4050 is a good mic. three patterns are helpful. you really can't go
wrong.
The new Rodes NT2000 and NT2-A are also quite good and have extremely low
self noise; down around where the TLM103 is. They are slightly bright, but
not as bright or as edgy as earlier Rodes.
The mic/preamp match has everything to do with the sound you get. For
example, 414s with the right preamp are not overly bright
As for a mic that's good on most male vocals; that's not a question that can
be answered with any degree of precision. Voices are too different.
I've done a lot of good recordings of male vocals with a U 89 and GML
preamps. Your mileage may vary
Wander around in my mic reviews for more info.

Well, I am using a Peavey VMP-2, Presonus MP2 (with jensen trannies)
and a mackie (pre VLZ) board to fill in any holes while tracking
basics.

That's why I said "most". I want a mic that will sound "good" on most
male voices. i.e. not a mic that has weird coloration that makes some
voices sound great and other voices sound terrible.

I already have and they have been a great resource. Thanks.

The VMP-2 is colored.

That should probably read:
"not a voice that has weird coloration that makes some mics sound great and
other mics sound terrible."
I've not found mics to really affect vocals that much. Preamps more so.
Drum overheads - SD AT4041,MXL603s
acoustic - SD or LD AT4041 or AT4050
vocal - AT4050 sounds pretty darn good thru the VMP-2 as does a RE-20.
Of course if it's a screaming rock singer (?), then a SM57 will do just fine.
Quality will not be an issue.
