I have a DELL notebook with a 30GB HD and I only have 5 GB left. I was wondering if there are any USB 1.x (not sure of the USB version before 2.0) external HDs. And if there are, how fast are they? Will it be acceptable for listening to mp3s and watching divx movies on them?

USB 1.1 only provides 12Mbps (mega bits pr. sec) and hence if a harddrive is run through this it will limited by this bandwidth significantly. However, mp3 requires only about 256 Kbps (sometimes as low as 128 Kbps) and DivX requires about 1 Mbps. So Usb 1.1 will provide enough bandwidth for that.
USB 2.0 provides 480 Mbps. Which is more than current harddrives can provide.
