Im no expert, but it sounds like the audio card does not have "duplex"
capability. Which basically means that it cannot output while it is
inputting. Full duplex typically means that you can monitor what is being
recorded on all channels. You might need a more powerful sound card to do
what you describe.
My soundcard is a Soundblaster Audigy2. I don't think it's the card, but
then I've never done this before.
When the application is up the sound comes through fine. It's when I hit
the red record button the sound
is muted. The only difference I see is that the app is writing a file to
the hard drive. It seems to be the
app muting the sound. I've gone through all the prefs and such. So far no
luck.
You may need to update your audio drivers so that you have the ASIO support:
I found this quote that leads me to believe that is the problem. Hope this
helps.
The Audigy 2 & Audigy 2 Platinum models that are currently available support
ASIO 2 Direct Monitoring. These Audigy products do not support ASIO 2 Word
Clock that is necessary for 24/96 recording. This level of support requires
a different level of hardware that will be available when the Audigy 2
Platinum EX makes it's debut.

Since Soundorge doesn't support ASIO drivers (it's a stereo editor, and
doesn't need to) I doubt hat's the problem.
Try clicking the 'monitor' button on the record dialogue'

I don't have a 'monitor' button. I select Special menu --> Transport -->
Record.
Here I have a modal window. It has buttons like New, Close, Remote...,
Window, Sync Out, Calibrate
and the buttons to record. I have a shield with "M" on it, but it says
"drop marker" on the mouse over.
Any other help would be appreciated. BTW, this is Sony Sound Forge 7.0, if
I didn't already mention that.

The "monitor" check box is for turning the record meters on and off.
Doesn't "duplex" refer to modems and phone devices, not sound cards?
I don't think your problem is a Sound Forge issue assuming you have
the correct settings for your record/playback device and you're
plugged in properly. In Sound Forge, check under
Options/Preferences/Wave and make sure you have your sound card
selected for both record and playback.
Maybe you need to set your mixer. Does your sound card have it's own
mixer or are you using the mixer that comes with Windows? Make sure
you have checked
line-in for both record and playback sections of the mixer and that
their "faders" are up, for example.

Oh, yeah, that check box went with V7 and is effectively permanently 'on'.
But in the absence of better ideas was worth a try.

Yes, applied to sound cards too. Full-duplex means, as in telephones,
similtaneous input and output. Obviously not, though, in the case of
soundcards, on the same pair of wires.
