I am building a new machine with 2 80GB HD Raid setup.
I was wondering which config would be faster ATA 133 2MB BUFFER or ATA 100 8MB BUFFER? Any opinions would be appreciated.
Both drives are 7200RPM and about 8.9 seek time......
Price about the same 115-125 per 80gb hd

The 133 is by Maxtor and the 100 is by Western Digital...

The ATA 133 drive will only be faster for files <2MB. And even then, it is only a 33% increase in speed. The ATA 100 drive has a bigger cache, so will perform better more often than the 133.

I don't know what you typically use your computer for, but I am leaning towards the ATA100 because of the larger cache. Besides, WD is better than Maxtor. I just got two WD800JB's 80GB 8MB and they are fast, reliable, and relatively quiet. If you buy Maxtor, expect a knocker.

UDMA100 with 8MB cache is the better way to go. UDMA133 has close to no speed advantage over UDMA100.

A hard drive running at peak speed can only transfer about 50m/b per sec anyway so you will see no difference with the maxtor ata133.

Why use windows when you can use doors?

Not so fast. Maxtor now has an 80GB with 8MB of cache and it's faster than the WD. Also I have to say from my experience I have loved Maxtor drives. 4 of them over the years and all good. Maxtor customer service was top notch too.

Maxtor or Western Digital...you can't go wrong with either. Not right now at least.
