I love the way Fox sports has upped the energy level of baseball coverage, but
the one thing that drives me berserk is the sound effect they put on top of
each pitch. It's definitely guilding the lilly. And half the time when it's
not in precise synch it just makes me crazy. Anybody else notice this?

Baseball is like Chess, a **lot** of strategy and thinking involved.
Possibly yer strategy quotient is being consumed by other activities, mine
sure is.
I like baseball because of the stunning athleticism commonly present. And
this series with Bean Town, well, just *gotta* follow it.
Must go to Boston someday, see the Big Dig, Bunker Hill, Cheers locale,
Massachusetts in general. Lovely area. You Yanks are so fortunate to have

They do the same on local Dodgers broadcasts. On those, with less
sophisticated audio, you hear the pitch "whoosh" but you don't hear
the crack of the bat.
On the Fox WS broadcasts, you hear the crack, and even the sound of
the ball hitting the glove on throws to first base. I've even heard
several of the players comments. I think they have to be careful with
that, because you can read their lips saying the F word frequently
when they strike out.

Hey KA,
Here in Canada it is also carried by SPORTSNET www.sportsnet.ca
They have different commentators, tho I'm used to the Fox guys but, PIP on,

Hey MS,
They mentioned during one of the past several games that they have a mic in
the base bags...
Replayed a clip several times of a guy rounding second who seemed to miss
the bag. They picked up the audio but determined it was his foot hitting
the ground nearby.

What the moron commentators failed to notice was the big dirt streak the
runner left on the base as the side of his cleats brushed the base. :-)

I love baseball, but I hate FOX.
They change the audio every time there is a camera switch. Therefore,
there it always sounds like there is a delay.
Don't get me started about the graphics and sound effects. Or Tim McCarver.

I noticed on several Dodgers broadcasts this year, that the audio is
very compressed. The crack of the bat is loud, and then the cheering
starts off loud, and pumps right after that.

Happy to report that the Big Dig is pretty much done. You can now drive
your car where they dug.
If you do make it to Boston, hit the Cape (Cod). Especially the outer
cape, beyond Hyannis. If you're adventurous drive all the way to
Provincetown, especially in the summer. Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard
are wonderful, but you'll have to take a boat (or a plane). But there's
nothing like P-town.
And yes, da Sox freekin' did it! Wish I could call my dad.

That's the audio op riding the fader. You gotta push it way up to get a
good crack (kinda like compressing a snare -- it ain't enough to just
get the initial transient, you gotta squish it to bring up some of the
meat). Then you gotta pull it down again real quick because if you
heard a hit, you're gonna hear a crowd.

Naaa. It was the backpage of a New York tabloid the morning after the
Sox finally drove the stake thru the heart of the hated Yanks at Yankee
Stadium.
After the unprecedented taking 4 straight from The Evil Empire, most
Sox fans felt no way would we be stopped by some team from St. Louis.
I'll take credit for having that premonition. ;>

Interesting. It sounds more like the sound of hitting a compressor /
limiter really hard. This could be anywhere in the chain. I watch these
games on MLB Extra Innings.

Yeah, that probably IS what you're hearing. When the fader gets jammed
up and the bat smacks the ball, you get a really quick mash from the
limiter. It's on purpose. Similar to compressing a snare... if you
don't bash the hit like that, it sounds too wimpy on TV. Combine that
with a swift pull back on the fader after the hit and you get some
interesting side effects (as you've astutely noticed!).

But you don't punch up the snare fader on every snare hit though. But a
quick fader push into the conpressor/limiters *does* work very well at the top
of Horn stabs (as I learned seconding Glen Kolotkin for Teo Macero.)
