I was wondering if anyone in here was going to Million Man LAN 3 this month. I'll be there and would like to meet up with anyone going.

They have 1,190 people registered as of today, 06-07-2004.

It should be a good party.

Not that I mind or anything and probably i'm just a silly old fart that does not understand, but what's the fun of having a 1000+ people LAN party when you have the internet where there's millions of people hooked up at once? It's not like you are going to meet all 1000 of them now, are you?

How many people are hooked up to one game server on such parties? Is the net performance on LAN parties of such a scale really (much) better than the internet itself?

LAN parties have a completely different feel than internet play. It's not even remotely the same. First of all you can talk to other people around you and it get's a lot more exciting. Second of all you can see who you beat.

I've never been to a LAN party, but I would sometimes bring my computer to my brothers house, who had like 4 more, and we'd do some crazy Counter-Strike'in. Even though it was on the same internet server we always played on, it was much funner playing together in person. It's great to clown someone to their faces rather than just type at them.

Yup. I've never gone to one of those either, but I've had parties at my place with a hub or two. Always a ton of fun although you hurt the next day after playing 12 hours straight of games.

I understand all that, but here we're talking a LAN party of 1000+ people. You are not going to meet all of them (not even close), it's a huge LAN I assume (or is it a collection of small LAN's?) and I'm curious how that affects the performance of the LAN and how it's still different from internet performance.

If you read some of the reviews of LANs on the front page of Toms, it tells how each one of them is set up & the activities that go on at a LAN. They started covering them awhile ago.

I've never been to a LAN myself either, but I've been fowling them for quite awhile in Toms & I'm getting really interested in playing at one of them.

I've told about our Tribes camp out each year. It's just good to meet people, no matter if you play or not. At least that's what I think.

Never really thought of that, but that's probably true as well.

I've organised mini LAN parties (5-10 people). 12 hours striaght playing is not *that* much.

No you most likely cannot meet all 1,200 people but you can meet a lot of new faces. Some of the guys I have met at various LANs have reserved the top floor at a hotel the night before just so they could have a warm-up night. LAN parties are all about fun.

At LANs there are crazy stunts like guys having their heads shaved or become walking advertisements for one of the event sponsors for free gear, guys sign up to have duck tape wars, tournaments, free for all gaming, etc.

MML3 is a great place so I can meet up with some of the guys from events like AsylumLAN, Stompfest, etc. There are a ton of people that even come down from Canada. Last year I met one of the LAN organizers from New England LAN Party who drove down to Louisville from New Hampshire.

Besides, LAN parties are way more entertaining than internet gaming. When I covered ACON4 in London Ontario I was able to see all of the action first hand. You cannot truly appreciate a highly skilled player until you can actually see all of the stuff that they are doing. (WC3 is one intense micromanagement game.) I can't wait until I go to CPL and Quakecon this year just to see the caliber players that will be in attendance.

Where do some of you guys live? Maybe there is a LAN in your area that I could get out to. It is cool meeting the faces behind the screen name. At a LAN you can talk trash in and out of the game and then go out for something to eat and talk about other stuff.
