I've just inherited an old file server. At first i was most interested in the nice case, which had 2 x 120mm fans strapped inside the front.

I booted it up and it seems it has Novell something or other running on it.

pentium pro 200
64MB (2 x 32MB EDO DIMMs)
2GB SCSI HDD
some intel motherboard.

I thought i would be pushing my luck installing win2k pro so I've opted for NT4, simply because I dont know anything about linux. I've never dealt with a scsi drive before either.

Will i be able to install NT like I have installed other OSs on IDE drives? I was hoping it would be as easy as formatting the HDD using a 98 boot disk, and installing fresh. But it cant be that easy can it?

Will my scsi drive need any drivers that are not on a standard win98 boot disk?

question, questions...
Appreciate the help.

ps. has anybody got any good links to newbies guides to linux?

Almost that easy. You don't need the Win 98 startup disk. I don't think Winodws NT setup will run from it anyway. Use the 4 Windows NT setup boot disks, or if the machine supports it, boot from the CD.

Windows NT setup will try and detect SCSI controllers installed in your system for you. It will then display a list of the controllers it has found (Your CD-ROM drive will be one of them) and ask you if you have any other controllers installed in your system. If the controller card is supported natively by Winodws NT (It's possible due to the age of the system) then it will show up as part of that list, if not, then there's an option for you to specify additional SCSI controllers manually using a floppy if required. (It's a good idea to identify the type of controller the system has and download drivers for it from the internet beforehand)

After that you just follow the prompts.

thanks dude, i used the win98 boot disk in the end cos i didnt have the nt ones. - the oem nt cd wouldnt boot even tho i enabled it in the bios.
Got it to work the second time round + yeah it supported my scsi controller natively. nice one!

I had to use fdisk, and choose NO when in asked me about large disk support. i created a 250 MB partition which i used to extract the setup files to. (it wouldnt work on a full 2 gig partition.)
booted from floppy, went into i386 folder and ran winnt.exe
then formatted the rest of the drive in setup.

Thanks for the help dude, I guess someone does still care!

That's cool. Sorry I was too late to be of help tho.

FYI if you have problems finding boot disks in the future, try http://www.bootdisk.com. If you follow the links from there, you can get access to NT setup boot disks at http://support.micronpc.com/file_lib/boot.html
