What I really need is a simple firewire to ADAT lightpipe converter... or a
laptop PC card with ADAT lightpipe I/O.

I know about the MOTU and RME products, but they have far too many features
(and thus too high of a price). I just need one set of 8 ins and outs via
lightpipe.

I'd like to do some mobile recording, so I need is a way to connect my
digital mixer with lightpipe I/O to my Laptop (Mac G4 1.33 ghz 17" ) to
record into Cubase SX. I need more than two channels (ideally 8) so USB 1.x
products are out. My laptop doesn't have USB 2, I don't think, so that's
out too.

Anyone know of a product?

The one option I know of is to buy the MLAN card for the Yamaha 01/v mixer,
and though that will work, $500 seems a lot of money for a relatively simple
purpose.

Well, I've been using DAWs since the early 90s... but thanks anyway!

Naw, really, something that is just a glorified format converter shouldn't
be that expensive. Oh well.

I'm not sure, but doesn't Fostex make one that will do that?
