I've installed a new Western Digital WD800JB [the 80GB drive with the 8MB cache] off a Promise Ultra133 TX2. The drive is FAST, FAST, FAST, but, unfortunately, it's also LOUD, LOUD, LOUD. It's making a high-pitched whining/screeching hum that sounds like fingernails scratching a chalkboard. [Actually, what it really sounds like is the screeching hum you hear from a jet engine when you fly as a passenger on one of the newer, better sound-proofed planes, like a Boeing 757 or 767. Or maybe a blender, when you're blending a soft fruit, and you turn it up to puree.] Is this normal for WD special edition [8 MB] drives, or is it a sign of a bad drive that's likely to fail? If it is normal, can somebody recommend a soundproofing material that would absorb this high frequency screeching hum? Thanks!
