I wonder if I could get opinions from some of you about this.
I'm thinking of using these two pieces of equipment with my M-box as a high
quality but relatively inexpensive front end.
I can get 2 channels of excellent mic-pre and A/D-D/A conversion for around
$2300.
Has anyone used either of these devices? Are they really as good as their
promotions say they are.
Thanks in advance for your help.

The Lunatec V3 is a fine mic pre/A-to-D, and the Benchmark DAC-1 is a
great D-to-A and headphone amp.

So why would you bother with the M-Box. Get a simple S/PDIF interface
for your PC and start recording.

Because I already have the M-box and need it to run Pro-Tools.

I've used the Grace briefly during a 4-way preamp comparison. It's a
good preamp, operates in a completely proper manner for professional
use. I have only auditioned its analog outputs, but I've heard live
stereo recordings made where the Grace's digital output fed the storage
device, and the sound was enjoyable. While I never chose it as my
favorite in our comparisons, I also never heard anything from it that
would make it unsuitable for high fidelity capture.

Of course not. Did you think these were amateurs?

Some folks find ProTools useful.

Ah, digidesign's proprietary stance strikes again!

Wouldn't it be nice if digidesing allowed ProTools to work with
commodity sound cards instead of making folks buy theirs?

They're in business to do business, not to be nice. They do give away a
version of PT, and that's more than one can say about plenty of other
software publishers.

Actually I was primarily interested in opinions on the converters in the
Grace, but just out of curiosity, what were the other preamps?

It might be nice but it is also nice as a vendor to own
both sides of the4 hardware-software interface. They can
actually do more systems integration that way.

Wouldn't it be nice if there were unlimited funds for Digidesign telephone
support to cover the real problems encountered by thousands of people who
won't read or don't understand manuals and don't know why their software
dujour isn't doing what they want it to (whether it was designed or
configured to do that or not) with Digidesign hardware.

I think getting the most from a system of software and hardware is not
trivial. I think Digi has begun to open the gates with ASIO, but it's really
easy to understand why they don't want to take undue criticism for software
made by others that doesn't work well with their hardware.

Live stuff I've heard captured with the Lunatec and output to storage
via its digital outs sounds good.

Great River MP2-MH, Millennia HV-3D, Gordon Instruments Model 3 (now
superceded by Models 4 and 5). Story's in the Google Group archives.

Thank you for the replies. Does anyone have an alternate suggestion for a
great sounding A/D, D/A, Mic pre, combination in this approximate price
range.

You might want to look into the Metric Halo ULN-2.
The convertors and pre are quite good for the price range and ease of use.
About $1000 or so.
